WinDVD Plus, once a worthy competitor to the likes of PowerDVD, is now a subsidiary of Corel. It still does a wonderful job of playing back regular DVD and Blu-ray discs, but has fallen behind in terms of functionality. Nevertheless, it does include much-sought-after DVD filters and decoders which were absent in Windows XP. Another useful feature which became popular with the PlayStation 3 system is the HD-upscaling which it performs on DVD playback; though not exactly the best way to watch HD, it does an OK job of achieving a level of high definition media players like VLC can't.

One other thing to report about WinDVD is its support of AVCHD files from high definition camcorders. It also includes the proper filters and decoders to play these files back nicely on your PC. Needless to say, it also plays back other formats such as media files using the DivX codec.
