PC Tools Freeware Firewall is a free firewall offered by a popular security software developer. It doesn't contain some of the bells and whistles of many of the paid firewall programs, but it does do a good job at monitoring traffic on your PC and can effectively protect your PC against the nasty effects of backdoors, trojans, keyloggers and other malware processes which try to evade your Windows firewall by sending unwanted traffic.
By installing this personal firewall, even if you are infected with a trojan backdoor, PC Tools Firewall will block the program from sending your personal details back to the host. This is highly effective at preventing you from identity theft, the theft of personal banking information and more.
As with all PC Tools products, their Firewall has a very easy-to-use user interface and gives you one-click access to common settings and profiles you want to activate. It often provides free updates and gives you easy access to programs you would like to block from using your Internet or network traffic.
The interface contains 7 main sections, only one of which is commercial in value: the Upgrade Now tab. You can access the firewall status, applications blocked/allowed, profiles, history, activity and settings. The settings tab is probably one of the first places you'd want to check out as it gives you access to a list of features you might want to disable, especially if you're always getting annoying notices where you'd normally just like to ignore them and have the application automatically take action.
On the main status window, you're also able to keep track of how much data has been used over periods of time.
Overall, PC Tools Freeware Firewall is a great product which effectively keeps your computer safe from outside sources. The fact that it is a free freeware application which is almost as good as their paid solution says a lot.
