Once you get your Nokia phone connected to your PC with the USB cable and the proper drivers installed, you'll be able to access the tons of features Nokia offers with its PC suite. With the PC Suite, you're able to connect your phone not only by USB, but also by Bluetooth and other connection options depending on your phone model.
The software can also help you download firmware updates for your Nokia handset, but BEWARE! I highly suggest avoiding firmware updates on Windows Vista systems. I did attempt a firmware update under Vista and it crashed, requiring me to bring my Nokia N95 in for service. I can't say whether this was an isolated incident, but I remember reading some forum threads recently which discouraged that.
Overall, you can use this program to update maps, synchronize media files like MP3 and movies, upload custom ringtones, backup and restore your contacts and do whatever you'd like with your phone's calendar.
Another cool feature is being able to view and backup SMS text messages or MMS messages. You can do that if you're about to update your phone's firmware because after an update, you lose everything in older models.
One other cool thing when you have this with the driver installed is that you can browse your phone's filesystem through Windows Explorer, though using that is a little bit sluggish.
