Maxthon Browser

Move over Firefox, we have a new speed demon in town with Maxthon Browser 3. A very lightweight Internet browser, Maxthon offers many features you'd expect to find in a modern browser with an extremely fast and well-built backend. Upon installation, you'll be greeted on the first run with the option to setup the Maxthon Passport which syncs your favourites and other settings anywhere you install it.

On the technical side, Maxthon actually utilizes two display engines, those being Trident and Webkit. Version 3 supports private browsing, per-page audio muting (most versions, actually) and language translations to name a few. One of the coolest built-in features of Maxthon 3 is the featured safe browsing powered by Kingsoft.

On testing the newest version of Maxthon, we were very (very, very) pleased to see that the interface has been cleaned up and up until now, CSS support seems flawless.. this is probably because it takes the best from two of the most popular display engines. Smart.

When comes to support for addons and skins, Maxthon doesn't let down. Support for addons in this branch of Maxthon will be implemented in November 2011, but a slew of different plugins exist for previous versions. While the userbase definitely isn't as large as Chrome or Firefox, the community around Maxthon does the best they can and plugins from News to Email Alerts, Development, Multimedia are available from their plugin web site. They are also some very beautiful skins available.

Further features packed into Maxthon include support for gestures. It also has a resource sniffer, a neat tool which Maxthon includes which can find images, files and videos on a web page; you can download these resources quickly. It also supports unconventional features for a browser like avatars with the Maxthon Passport and split-screen browsing.

The Maxthon Browser has a strong following among Chinese Internet users, but it seems to be growing as a safe, alternative browser around the world.
