Linux MultiMedia Studio (LMMS) is an excellent freeware music creation application which competes with commercial products like Fruity Loops. Even though the name implies that it is a Linux-only application, there is infact a Windows port which runs perfectly.
The main application of LMMS is able to edit beats, loops and MIDI sound tracks and is able to apply a number of special effects to your music projects. In addition to editing music, it can playback the tracks you're working on also in edit mode.
One important feature worth mentioning about Linux MultiMedia Studio is its drum machine support. It can edit and play many different file formats with the most important being OGG and MP3 files, along with typical WAV support.
Another good thing about LMMS is the virtual piano which creates MIDI tracks and the 64-channel music mixer which supports an enormous amount of effects. LMMS can also automate some of your tasks such as volume normalization and application of filters.
In the end, Linux MultiMedia Studio is a great open source project which is still a work-in-progress. With that said, it can do a lot of wonderful things to your music tracks and includes online documentation with help on how to do various tasks. If you're low on cash or simply don't want to pay for such an advanced audio editing application, then LMMS is for you. From LMMS:
