VLC Media Player is a great thing to have because it supports a wide variety of formats and can play virtually anything you throw at it. Unfortunately, the layout of VLC isn't too pretty.
With JuceVLC, you're given a media center-style layout which is powered by VLC, as its name suggests. You're given on-screen navigation controls, big buttons and a layout which is suitable for larger screens.
Version 0.91 is a freeware program which does not have restrictions and it's free so it doesn't cost anything.
