With around 20,000 people from all sectors of society coming out to run or support the annual CIBC Run for the Cure this Sunday in Montreal, fundraisers there raised almost $2.1 million for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

About 6,100 women in Quebec are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and the net proceeds of the event go towards funding research, promoting education and awareness and support to those suffering with the disease.

The event took off at Maisonneuve Park on Sherbrooke St. E. where runners, walkers and otherwise supporters took on the 5km course.

The fundraiser is one of many across Canada which has raised $16.5 million since 1994.

Similar events were held in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and other large cities. Toronto fundraisers raised over $5 million while the event in Ottawa picked up $1.6 million for the Breast Cancer Foundation. The run takes place in 60 communities across Canada.
