With Google's Android operating system expect to dominate the mobile phone market in 2011 and beyond, Microsoft is expected to launch its mobile operating system on 11 October 2011.

The company is holding simultaneous press conferences in London and New York and while it hasn't been officially announced what they're getting at, industry insiders reckon it's to announce their new mobile platform.

With the fanfare and user enthusiasm around Google's Android, the Microsoft version has fallen to the sidelines with the market share dropping drastically over the past months. The new Windows Phone 7 will distance its-self from its predecessors with an ultimate focus on social media integration, probably similar to Motorola's BLUR product.

Like Apple does with its iPhone and iPod products, the design of Microsoft's new user interface will draw heavily from its Zune MP3 player with simplified one-touch access to important contacts and data and special 'hubs' for access to main system functions and content.

Bing search is expected to be heavily integrated with the OS, similar to Google search products and Android. Voice recognition and maps are set to be standard features.

Microsoft is hoping to catch up to Apple and Google in the mobile phone arena with functionality and design, but many critics claim they're too late in the game unless Microsoft is able to produce a better product.

Market research firm Gartner has claimed that Nokia’s open source Symbian OS will hold a 40.1 percent of the mobile operating system market share at the end of 2010. Google’s Android will have 17.7 percent, RIM’s BlackBerry with 17.5 percent, Apple’s iOS with 15.4 percent and Windows Mobile from Microsoft with 4.7 percent.

2010 will see the launch of several new models featuring the new operating system including Dell, HTC, HTP, LG, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm. The first phones are coming to Europe in October and North America the following month in November.
