Introduction to Lesotho
The Kingdom of
Lesotho ('Lesotho) is a southern African country. It is a land locked country, entirely surrounded by the Republic of
South Africa. Formerly Basutoland, it is a member of the Commonwealth. The name Le-sotho roughly translates into "the land of the people who speak Sotho".
The most notable geographic fact about Lesotho, apart from its status as an enclave, is that it is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 metres in elevation. Its lowest point is 1,400 m, and over 80% of the country lies above 1,800 m.

Cultural notes about Lesotho
Lesotho is a Southern African nation surrounded entirely by South Africa. The largest ethnic group is the Basotho. Traditional musical instruments include lekolulo, a kind of flute by herding boys, setolo-tolo, played by men using their mouth, and the women's stringed thomo. The national anthem of Lesotho is "Lesotho Fatše La Bo-ntata Rona," which literally translates into "Lesotho, Land Of Our Fathers." The Morija Arts & Cultural Festival is a prominent Sotho music festival. It is held annually in the historical town of Morija, where the first missionaries arrived in 1833.
Official Canadian government advisories for travelling to, in and around Lesotho
Petty theft, pickpocketing, armed robberies, and carjackings can occur, especially in Maseru. Do not resist assailants if attacked or robbed. There have been incidences of carjackings and of residential break-ins. In a recent incident, a British staff residence was robbed. Foreign diplomats and members of foreign aid missions may also be targeted. Remain vigilant at all times, ensure your personal belongings and travel documents are secure, avoid walking or driving after dark, and never pick up hitchhikers. Do not stop by the side of the road even at scenic points, especially on the northern access road to Katse Dam and in the Highlands area.
Canadians should remain informed of developments that could affect their safety, avoid large crowds and demonstrations, and carry identity documents.
