The Republic of
El Salvador (Spanish for "The Savior"), which was known prehispanically as Cuscatlán, is a country in Central America with a population of approximately 6.7 million people. It is the most densely populated nation on the American mainland (especially in its capital, San Salvador). It is also the most industrialized country in the region.

Cultural notes about El Salvador
A small part of the population speaks Nahua, the native language. The Roman Catholic religion played an important role in the Salvadoran culture. Painting, ceramics and textile articles are the main manual artistic expressions. Writers Francisco Gavidia (1863–1955) and Manlio Argueta, and poet Roque Dalton are among the most important artists to stem from El Salvador. Notable 20th century personages include the late filmmaker Baltasar Polio and artist Fernando Llort.

Criminal activity has declined steadily in recent years, but crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, rape, and kidnapping are still common throughout the country. Avoid travelling after dark, including San Salvador. Ensure personal belongings and travel documents are secure at all times. Hotels in the neighbourhoods of Escalón and San Benito are generally safe. Demonstrations and protests occur throughout the country and should be avoided. Local police can be contacted at 911.
Robberies often occur on public transportation and in tourist areas. Travel only with reputable tourist organisations or persons familiar with local conditions.
Climbers and hikers have been robbed while climbing volcanoes and hiking in other remote locations.
Swimming in the Pacific Ocean is risky due to strong currents and undertow. Avoid isolated beaches.
